Below is a brief explanation of the weather events and climatic changes available for you to choose from, when rating impacts on your supply chain. It may be helpful to refer to this list if you are unsure about the type of event impacting your supply chain.
Frost: Deposit of soft white ice crystals or frozen dew drops on objects near the ground; formed when surface temperature falls below freezing point.
Extreme heat: An extended period of very high maximum and minimum temperatures that has the potential to adversely affect urban and rural communities, infrastructure and the natural environment.
Heatwave: Three days or more of high maximum and minimum temperatures that is unusual for a particular location.
Increased average temperature: An increase in the average maximum and minimum temperatures for a location.
Extreme rainfall: A period of intense precipitation. For example, an extreme rain day is defined as a location receiving greater than the 90th percentile for 24 hour rainfall.
Unseasonal rain patterns: The occurrence of rainfall that is uncharacteristic of a particular season.
Drought: A period of acute water shortages, with areas considered to be suffering from a serious or severe rainfall deficiency.
Flooding: Water inundating an area of land which is normally dry. Causes may include high water levels in watercourses, flash flooding from intense rainfall, and storm surges in coastal areas.
Tropical cyclone: Intense low pressure systems which form over warm ocean waters at low latitudes. Tropical cyclones are associated with strong winds, torrential rain and storm surges (in coastal areas).
Sea-level rise: An increase to the mean sea level (ocean surface) at a specific point of measurement.
High humidity (relative): Relatively high water vapour content in the air. Relative humidity is the ratio of the amount of water vapour actually measured to that which air could hold at saturation.
Low humidity (relative): Relatively low water vapour content in the air. Relative humidity is the ratio of the amount of water vapour actually measured to that which air could hold at saturation.
Hail: Precipitation of ice particles. Usually spheroid, conical or irregular in form and with a diameter varying generally between 5 and 50 millimetres.
Strong winds: Average wind speeds of 40 km/h (22 knots) or greater.
Unseasonal winds: Wind conditions that are uncharacteristic of a particular season.
